Virgin Atlantic is officially back in The Bahamas with the first flight landing in dreary conditions on a wet Saturday afternoon. While the weather wasn’t very welcoming, there was certainly a buzz in the air as a number of aircraft spotters braved the torrential downpours to get the perfect shot. The flight routing begins in London Heathrow, landing in Nassau and then continues on to Montego Bay (Jamaica) before tracing its steps back to Heathrow. The twice weekly service (Wednesdays and Saturdays) is being operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. With this flight beginning, it further increases airlift between The Bahamas and the United Kingdom with British Airways flying six times per week. Ironically, given the almost identical scheduled departure times, Virgin and British Airways raced across the Atlantic and had identical flight times of 9 hours and 32 minutes with British Airways landing just four minutes ahead of Virgin.

This isn’t the first time that Virgin has operated to the island nation, previously operating the Queen of the skies (Boeing 747-400) once a week from London, Gatwick beginning in 2005. Flights lasted for about a year and a half before they ceased operations. This new service comes as Virgin looks to expand in the Caribbean region, responding to the high demand for the region by UK travellers after months of harsh lockdowns and border closures. Not only is Virgin starting new service to The Bahamas, but also to St. Lucia and they are also increasing offerings to existing countries that they already serve such as Jamaica and Barbados.

The new routes and increased frequency is certainly great news for the Caribbean. As most economies in the region are driven by tourism, these increased flights and new services help each island nation to rebuild and recover after the devastating affects of the pandemic. One thing is for certain, people are excited to travel again and the Caribbean is happy to welcome visitors to their shores once again.
